Your personal exam timetable

We will email you a reminder to check your exam timetable when it releases viamyUNSW.

Exam timetables are newly created after the census date each term, based on student enrolments and programs. We advise you to avoid making plans during the exam sessionuntil your final exam timetable releases. Check the for provisional and final exam timetables.

Please note: You must attend your exam at thetime, date and location indicated by your timetable. If you don't sit your exam at the correct venue, you will disadvantage fellow students and may be penalised forAcademic Misconduct.

  • The university has a few guidelines in place to make the examination period a fair and positive experience for you:

    • Exam duration
      Centrally administered examinations have a standard duration of 2 hours.
    • Exam start times
      On-campus centrally managed invigilated exams (i.e. exams with a UNSW room location on your timetable) have standard start times of either:
      • 9:45am for the morning session
      • 1:45pm for the afternoon session
      • 5:45pmfor the evening session
    • Maximum exams per day
      You should not normally be required to sit more than 2 exams on the same day.
    • Final week of course
      Examination assessments cannot be scheduled in the final week of a standard teaching period if they contribute to more than 20% of the final grade for a course.
    • Study break period
      Examinationscannot be scheduled in the study breakperiod.
    • In-term exams
      Schools are advised to hold their internal exams during scheduled class time. Any formal assessment scheduled during the examination period must be included on the UNSW exam timetable.
    • Alternative venues
      With due notice, UNSW has the right to conduct exams in alternative suitable spaces, either on or within a reasonable distance of the campus. If an exam cannot be held because of unforeseen circumstances (e.g. a security threat or damage to an exam room), theexam may be rescheduled within the designated exam period. We advise you to remain available for the duration of the exam period.
    • Releasing your exam timetable ahead of time
      A few weeks before your main exam period, you will be able to access your provisional and exam timetables on myUNSW. Take note of these at the start of each term.

Can't attend your exam?

If you have valid circumstances preventing you from taking the exam as scheduled, you may be eligible for alternative arrangements (such as a supplementary exam).

Definitions for each column

  1. Course– the course you're enrolled in which this exam is run under.
  2. Exam Opens– the time your exam starts (or opens), including reading or extra time. You should be ready at least 15 minutes before this time, either on-campus or remotely.
  3. Exam Closes– the time your exam ends (or closes).
  4. Exam Duration– how much time you can spend on your exam, including reading timeԻextra time.
  5. Approved Extra Time*(this column only appears if required) – the extra time you may receive in addition to the Exam Durationif recommended by Equitable Learning Services (ELS).
  6. Paper #– the paper number for the exam. Some courses have two or more exams per teaching period.
  7. Exam Platform– how the exam will be delivered e.g. whether it is online through Moodle or Inspera, or offline (on campus with pen and paper).
  8. Location– this is where (or how) you will take your exam. If a room is listed, you are expected to sit your exam on campus. If your Exam Platformis repeated, you will take your exam online, remotely. Learn more about Inspera.
  9. Materials– the only provisions you can bring into your exam aside from a pen, pencil, eraser and ruler. You should also bring your mobile phone, which is to be turned off and stored under your desk, and a laptop if the Exam Platform is Inspera.

Please note: Once the provisional timetable releases, you should be able to see all exam details*, except for the location (which releases with the final timetable).

* If you have an Equitable Learning Plan (ELP), you may need to wait a bit longer to see the exact details of your exams while we make changes according to your provisions.

Key terms for your exam timetable

  • Ifthe difference between yourExam OpensԻExam Closestimes isexactly as longas yourExam Duration, then those are your start and end times for the exam.

    For example:If your exam opens at 9:45am and closes at 12pm with a duration of 2 hours + 15 minutes, then those are yourstart and end times. If you start late, your exam will still end at 12pm.

  • If the difference between theExam OpensԻExam Closestimes islongerthan theExam Duration, then those are the times your window to take the exam opens and closes.

    For example:If your exam opens at 8am and closes at 8pm with a 1-hour duration, then the exam will be open for 12 hours and you can start any time after 8am.As long as you start before 7pm you will get your complete 1-hour exam time.If you start at 8am, your exam will end at 9am, but if you start at 7:30pm, your exam will still end at 8pm because the 12-hour window will have closed.

  • Your duration may contain+10 mins. This is reading time, given at the start of your exam for you to look through the exam questions. You cannot work on your exam during reading time.

    Reading time won't count towards your Equitable Learning Plan (ELP).

  • Your duration may contain+ 15 minutes. This is extra time, given at the start of your exam to cover any technical issues that may occur. You are allowed to start working on your exam during the extra time given.

Frequently asked questions

  • The format of your exam is unable to be changed. You must come to campus to undertake an in-person examination. Only remote exams can be taken off-campus.

    If you are facing illness or other short term circumstances beyond your control which will affect your ability to undertake your in person examination, apply for .

  • After the timetable releases, you may see a message saying No Exams Recorded(as shown below) if you don't have any final exams. If you believe an exam is missing after the release of your final timetable, please contact exams@unsw.edu.au.

  • Your exam timetable may not specify a time, duration or location for school managed exams and instead, sayPlease consult school for exam time and duration or Internal exam – Consult school.

    Information about these exams will usually be posted on or provided in your Course Outline. If you are unsure about the details for these exams, contact your lecturer or course authority.

  • If your application for Special Consideration is approved, you may receive a supplementary exam. You'll be able to view the date, time and other details for your supplementary exam in your .
