It is your responsibility to be familiar with the rules governing the conduct of exams on campus and online.UNSW can impose heavy penalties if you breach exam rules.

Read the on-campus and online exam rules above before sitting a formal exam. If you are unsure of any of the following instructions, please contact exams@unsw.edu.au.

On campus exam rules

🪪 Don't forget to bring your student ID card!

You must display your current UNSW student identification card on your desk for the duration of the exam. If you don't have your ID card, you will be required to provide other official photo identification such as your Drivers Licence or Passport. Electronic versions of identification are not permitted.

If you don't have any physical photo ID with you, you will need to stay back after the exam until the UNSW Examinations Team can confirm your identification.

If your name has changed or your card has expired or is lost or damaged, book an appointment with The Nucleus: Student Hub immediately for a replacement ID card.

Be aware of the rules that applyat each step of your in person exam.

1. Arriving at and leaving the exam venue

You must:

Be seated in the correct room no less than 15 minutes before the exam start time.

✅ Leave your belongings outside,including your bag, pencil case, books, notes, electronic diary, food1, medication or any other materials not specified as required for your exam (except for your valuables2).

You must not:

🚫 Enter the exam room any later than 30 minutesafter the exam commences.

🚫 Re-enter the exam room after leaving itunless you were under approved supervision the entire time you left.

🚫 Take an answer booklet or examination paper from the exam room, unless instructed otherwise.

🚫 Wear hats, helmets, earpieces or any other headwear in the exam room. The exception to this is a religious head covering3and/or hearing aids. If you require hearing aids, you mustbe enrolled with the ().

2. Before the exam starts

You must:

❗ Follow all instructions given by exam supervisors.

Switch off all mobile telephones and/or any other communication equipment, including smart watches and music players.

Put away your wrist and/or handheld watch faced down under your desk.

Place your valuables under your desk before the exam commences. Laptops and tablets are permitted under your desk, but they must be switched off.

Stay inside the exam roomuntil at least 30 minutes after the exam commences. If you need to leave for any reason, please inform your exam supervisor.

3. During the exam

You must:

Answer all questions in English unless stated otherwise.

Be considerate of others if you finish early and wish toleave the exam room. Your exam supervisor may instruct you to wait back if the exam is ending soon.

You must not:

🚫 Write during reading time or after the exam finishes.

🚫 Seek to gain an unfair advantage in any wayduring the exam.

🚫 Endeavour to obtain assistance in your work or give assistance to any other candidate, or commit any other breach of conduct.

1If you have a medical condition that requires you to eat during an exam, you need to register with prior to your exam.

2 UNSW cannot guarantee the safekeeping of valuables either inside or outside the exam room.If you are concerned about the security of your valuable possessions, please make alternative arrangements for their care.

⚠️ What to do if you feel unwell during your exam

If you feel unwell to the point that you cannot continue with your exam, you should take the following steps:

  1. Stop working on your exam immediately and raise your hand
  2. Advise the supervisor or invigilator that you are not feeling well
  3. Leave the examination room (if your exam is on Inspera, don't forget to submit first)
  4. Obtain a medical certificate dated within 24 hours of the examination date
  5. Submit a application within 3 working days of the exam date stating that you felt ill during the exam and were unable to continue.

Online exam rules

When completing an online exam, you are declaring that all of your answers are entirely your own work unless acknowledged or otherwise permitted.

Should any formof academic misconduct be detected, breaching theStudent Code,the University may take disciplinary action under theStudent MisconductProcedure.
