A new home for UNSW’s Rural Clinical Campus in Wagga Wagga brings a world-class contemporary medical education to rural and regional students. The $26 million UNSW Biomedical Sciences Centre is located next to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and opened in early 2025.  It was supported by a $21 million funding commitment from the federal government, as part of its wider $95.4 million investment in the Murray-Darling Medical Schools Network (MDMSN).  

The four-storey Biomedical Sciences Centre features specialised science labs, high-tech simulation facilities, a dry anatomy lab, a lecture theatre, tutorial rooms, study areas, and lounge.  

Students can complete their entire six-year medical degree locally, reducing the financial burden of relocating to Sydney, enhancing the local economy and community. The advanced facilities provide access to cutting-edge technology and resources, enhancing their learning experience. 

Staff benefit from modern teaching environments and increased research opportunities through collaboration with local health providers. The strategic partnership with Murrumbidgee Local Health District ensures long-term clinical placements, opportunities for specialised post-graduate training and valuable local health research opportunities.  

The community will see more doctors practicing in Wagga Wagga and surrounding areas. The centre also aims to increase enrollments of Indigenous students, addressing the shortage of clinicians in rural areas. 

The UNSW Rural Clinical Campus in Wagga Wagga and other regional areas of New South Wales stands as a testament to the University’s commitment to develop highly trained medical professionals and address the shortage of clinicians in these areas.
