The Division of Operations includes Estate Management (EM), one of the largest non-academic units at UNSW. We offer a range of services and advice to Faculties, Divisions, and the University Executive Team, including campus master planning, infrastructure planning, development, construction, property & retail, refurbishment, maintenance, and environmental management. We also provide a wide range of logistics and associated services to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. With 170+ staff, EM delivers services, support and guidance through its six directorates under the leadership of the Chief Property Officer (CPO).

    1. Understand education, research, and social impact objectives of faculties and divisions with their facility and infrastructure demand requirements. 
    2. Support faculty in developing business cases and develop project briefs, enhancing infrastructure planning and ensuring efficient use of resources.​
    3. Develop faculty and divisional estate management plans to optimise space utilisation. ​
    4. Assess endorsed faculty space requests against Asset Management principles. Resolve approved space requests to enable Business Case objectives.​
    5. Assess utilisation of existing spaces, identifying opportunities for improvement through refurbishment, repurposing, or relocation.​
    6. Assess long-term infrastructure requirements and define objectives to align with strategic direction.
  • The Design, Delivery & Development team manages the creation of new and refurbished physical assets and infrastructure for the University.

    1. Manage university assets, aligning projects with strategic goals, overseeing design and construction, and coordinating relocations with stakeholders.​
    2. Ensure construction contracts are compliant, and projects meet architectural, structural, safety, and quality standards.
    3. Deliver major capital developments aligned with the UNSW Master Plan, managing relationships with university stakeholders and government authorities.​
    4. Deliver capital works that support university goals, providing planning, budgeting and program advice for aligned projects.
    5. Support digital building systems and infrastructure across campuses, offering strategic and technical support for new and existing projects.​
    6. Provide expert advice on mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems, aiding Development and Estate Improvement teams.
  • Environmental Sustainability partners with the UNSW community to embed sustainable practices across our campuses and activities. ​

    1. Develop and coordinate UNSW environmental sustainability plans, templates and associated reporting.​

    3. Collaborate across operations to embed sustainability in waste, procurement and facilities management. ​
    4. Establish standards and templates for sustainability in the built environment and support project teams to achieve benchmarks.
    5. Deliver the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) program to support laboratories in implementing resource efficiency initiatives.​
    6. Develop programs, resources and reports to promote sustainable behaviours and improve rankings.​

    Protective Services ensures a safe and secure campus by protecting people, property, and assets, while providing guidance on security, emergency, and traffic management.

    We achieve this by: 

    1. Managing security guarding services including patrols, incident response, and personal safety advice. 
    2. Promoting the SafeZone app as the primary emergency communication tool for the campus community.
    3. Overseeing emergency management and critical incident arrangements for effective preparedness, response, and recovery. 
    4. Collaborating with law enforcement and the campus community to develop crime prevention initiatives.
    5. Undertaking threat and risk assessments to maintain a strong and proactive security posture. 
    6. Managing and maintaining electronic security systems to support safe campus operations. 
    7. Facilitating emergency exercises with the campus community to ensure readiness. 
    8. Managing access permissions and issuing staff and contractor ID cards. 
    9. Managing parking operations across campus. 
  • Facilities Management is responsible for managing UNSW’s buildings, services, external environment, and campus infrastructure, ensuring they are safe, clean, and fit for purpose.

    1. Overseeing repairs, maintenance, and general services (cleaning, grounds, waste and relocations).​
    2. Managing major building shutdowns associated with utilities (e.g., power, water, gas) and maintaining service continuity.​
    3. Ensuring a safe, compliant, functional and efficient campus environment.
    4. Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate risks.
    5. Engaging in effective communication for escalated operational matters affecting building occupants.​
    6. Implementing lifecycle upgrade works to maintain the functionality and reliability of facilities.​
  • Safety is dedicated to implementing the Estate Management Safety Plan and supporting programs. The team manage safety incidents, lead investigations, and provide essential safety advice to staff.​

    1. Ensuring all Estate Management activities align with the UNSW Safety Strategy and support the delivery of the Division of Operations Safety Implementation Plan.
    2. Responding to safety incidents, leading investigations to identify root causes, and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
    3. Undertaking contractor assurance activities to ensure compliance with legislative and UNSW WHS requirements.
    4. Providing expert guidance, answering safety-related queries, and helping EM staff discharge their WHS duties.
    5. Compile reports on safety performance, insights, trends and culture (drawing on lead and lag indicators) to support strategic safety decision-making and compliance.
    6. Facilitating training sessions, workshops, and supporting the implementation of safety campaigns to build a strong safety culture.
