Past student experiences

Advaita Nitturkar - Drought Resistance Uganda
Advaita Nitturkar
Environmental engineering/Humanitarian minor 4th year
Program: Drought Resistance Uganda (DRU)
Supervisor: Dr Andrew Dansie
I went into Uganda knowing very little about our partners and the country, carrying only my newly found passion for humanitarian engineering. Yet after that trip, it felt like all the memories, friendships, and lessons couldn’t possibly have come from just a fortnight, and they’re ones I’ll cherish for a lifetime. I think what was really beautiful was that everyone on the trip, including our friends in-country, was driven by a shared purpose to try and make a positive difference, which made our trip all about sharing knowledge and experiences across borders.

Olivia - UNSW Énergie Renouvelable Vanuatu
Olivia
3rd year Renewable Energy Engineering student
Program:Ìý
Supervisor: Richard Corkish
The experience allowed me to apply the theoretical knowledge I learnt in university such as sizing solar arrays and wiring to help various small communities across the island of Tanna. Coming from Australia, I learnt to be extremely grateful for instantaneous access to water, electricity and food.

Paul Ananth - PermaYouth Camp
Paul Ananth
Civil Engineering/Commerce (Finance) – 5th year
Program:ÌýPermaYouth Camp, Timor Leste
Supervisor:ÌýGreg Leslie
Seeing the real-world impact of humanitarian engineering in Timor-Leste opened my eyes to how even simple, practical solutions can transform lives. It reminded me that true engineering isn’t just technical, it’s about compassion, context, and creating meaningful change for those who need it most.

Sadia Khaja - TEDI-London Summer School Program
Sadia Khaja
5th Year Environmental Engineering/ Humanitarian Engineering
Program:ÌýTEDI-London Summer School Program (CDEV3300), UK
The TEDI-London Summer School was an incredible opportunity to collaborate with students from diverse disciplines and universities around the globe on real-world engineering challenges. The program helped me develop a global, future-focused outlook while building lasting friendships and exploring the vibrant city of London.

Sanmugi Sivakumar - Thought for Food Indonesia 2024
Sanmugi Sivakumar
6th Year Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) / Bachelor of Environmental Engineering Science
Program:ÌýThought for Food Indonesia 2024,ÌýIndonesia (Jakarta and Bandung)
