Title: Frontiers in Affective Computing: Exploring how emotions shape — and are shaped by — our interactions with technology

Abstract:Â In this talk, I will look into the dynamic field of affective computing within Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), focusing on how we can sense emotions, with a special focus on how humans experience virtual reality (VR) emotionally, and physically. We will explore the challenges and opportunities of researching emotions in HCI, offering insights into how emotions influence user experiences and how technology, in turn, impacts our emotional states.
Bio: Dr. Benjamin Tag is an early-career researcher and educator in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), specialising in affective computing, physiological sensing, and embodied interaction in immersive environments. His work explores how emotions can be sensed, interpreted, and integrated into interactive systems — with a particular focus on how people emotionally and physically experience virtual reality (VR).
Benjamin has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers, including in top venues like ACM CHI, UbiComp, and Augmented Humans, earning multiple awards for research excellence and service to the HCI communityHe currently serves as an Associate Editor for PACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT)Â and contributes to several international conference committees. Blending empirical experimentation, physiological sensing, and applied affective computing, his research investigates the boundaries between digital and physical experiences, aiming to design technology that better understands and responds to humans in context.
