Tom Cavanagh is a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He studies the changing geographies and political economies of forests in post-conflict countries, with a focus on Cambodia, Liberia, and Colombia. His research explores how new and emerging financial mechanisms are reshaping environmental governance and development in these contexts.

Tom is currently the lecturer and convener for ARTS2240: Environment, Sustainability and Development and ARTS2248: Disasters and Society. He also a tutor for INST1005: Key Debates in International Studies and ARTS1753: Culture, Experience and Change.

Outside of UNSW, Tom is the co-chair of the Forest Interest Group within the Environmental Peacebuilding Association and previously worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on forest governance initiatives. He holds a Master of Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Sydney, where he received the Cheryl Minks Prize for best dissertation in Peace and Conflict Studies and the Gordon Rodley Prize for best performance in Peace and Conflict Studies. He also holds a Bachelor of International Studies from UNSW.
